In 2009, Matsumiya launched The Rainbow Project, a charitable endeavor inspired by an exchange of rainbow photos with a friend and as a reaction to the devastating earthquake in Japan that same year. The project called on people around the world to upload their personal rainbow photos while also making a donation to support Civic Force Japan, Peace Winds Japan, and JOICFP, organizations aimed at bringing relief to those affected by the Japanese earthquake.

The photos were collaged together into one giant, beautiful collective rainbow that served as a symbol of cosmic solidarity and compassion. The resulting Rainbow Project collage was also later projected on the rooftop of The Standard hotel in Los Angeles, along with a rainbow abstraction by artists Eliot Kaufman and the Lucky Dragons.
